What Are Dental Implants
Implants are a great way to replace missing teeth. They also provide a fixed solution to having removable partial or complete dentures. Dental implants are artificial roots and teeth (usually titanium) that are surgically placed into the upper or lower jaw bone by a dentist or Periodontist. The artificial teeth attached to implants look natural and often enhance or restore a patient’s smile!
Benefits of Dental Implants
There are many reasons to undergo this surgery. Here are some of the benefits our patients who have elected for implants have experienced:
- Restored or improved a smile
- Improved speech
- Improved comfort
- Improved overall oral health
- Improved bite and ability to chew
Tooth Implant Process
While each dental implant surgery and process is different, generally there are 4 stages in the implant process. The overall treatment can take multiple months from start to finish.
Stage One: Initial Exam, x-rays, and molds.
Our dentists and dental implant surgeons take the time to form a comprehensive understanding of your treatment goals and overall health history. X-rays and molds give us critical information about your jaw bone, gums, and teeth spacing to help us properly and effectively insert and customize the implant.
Stage 2: Surgery
When it is time to do the implant, we numb the area, and then surgically place the post the implant will ultimately reside on. Depending on the patient, we also might place a temporary implant here. Our dental implant surgeons usually perform this as an outpatient procedure, so you can go home the same day as your surgery.
Stage 3: Waiting for the Bone and Gums to Heal
It will take your mouth approximately six months to heal and for the tooth implant to integrate into your mouth.
Stage 4: Placing a Crown or Bridge
Once the implant has had time to fuse with the bone and gums, our dental implant specialists will then apply a crown or bridge. Usually, this will take several appointments to create the final piece. Our professionals will take the time to mold a crown or bridge that will properly fit in your mouth and replace the old tooth. Once this replacement is ready, we will then place it on your implant.
Common Questions About This Procedure
How long do implants last?
As long as you properly maintain and care for and follow general oral hygiene best practices, your implants can last your entire life. When your treatment is complete, we will provide you detailed instructions on how to care for your implant. Of course, brushing and flushing often, having healthy eating habits, and visiting your dentist regularly will help you stay healthy and ensure the longevity of your tooth implant.
How painful is it to get implants?
The dental implant procedure is generally less painful than pulling a tooth thanks to anesthesia. During your procedure we apply anesthesia to help numb your mouth so as to limit your discomfort.
What is the success rate for dental implants?
While the individual success rate of each patient’s procedure can vary due to a number of factors including where on the jaw it is placed, dental implant surgery generally has a 98% success rate.
